How to make confident and stylish choices in your own wardrobe selections..
My red carpet LTK Gala look at the Natural History Museum.
As a stylist, there are lots of elements to consider when putting looks together for clients, whether they're attending a red carpet event, hosting one, or presenting on TV. Dressing has the power to evoke certain feelings and empower you to be your best self. I’m always amazed at how clothing can alter someone's mood. That spark that shows up when someone wears something they love—there's nothing quite like it. My hope is that these newsletters will assist you in creating your own unique looks at home, helping you feel like the best version of yourself.
Let's break down my recent LTK Gala look:
For the event at the Natural History Museum, I opted for a black Vivienne Westwood dress. Since it was a work event with familiar faces and brands in attendance, I aimed for a smart, sophisticated, yet comfortable look. I had two dresses in my wardrobe to choose from (see below).
Ultimately, I went with the black dress because it felt perfect for the occasion—it felt sophisticated with a hint of playfulness, thanks to a discreet leg split. However, my shoe choice turned out to be a bit of a misstep. I initially wanted to add a pop of colour and coolness by wearing black and pink shoes, but in hindsight, I should have opted for platforms. My feet suffered throughout the night, reminding me of the importance of comfortable footwear, especially for work events where you need to be on top form. I picked some vintage jewellery to finish of the look from 4 element - you can rent anything on there website. I went for a big-ish gold clip on which I thought made the look feel a bit more glamours
Alice did my makeup, we kept it natural as that’s when I feel most confident.
If you're unsure about what to wear for an upcoming work event, consider how you want to feel and build your outfit around that. Reflect on past moments when you felt most confident and use them as inspiration. You can tweak elements like shoes, bags, jewellery, or makeup. There are countless components to an outfit.
I've already started brainstorming ways to restyle this dress for future events—I envision pairing it with black suspenders and classic Vivienne Westwood shoes for a fashion-forward look. Alternatively, it could be a perfect choice for a wedding when styled with classic heels or adding a blazer and wearing my hair up to completely transform the look. Some inspo below.
I've included some outfits below I think would work well for a work party or event. I hope they inspire you! Styling tips below…
Look 1: If you feel like it's too much leg, you can always add a 15/20 denier black tight.
Look 2: The dress does the work for you - this one's very versatile. Hair up or down, and you could go with heavy smoky eyes!
Look 3: As this dress is quite glam, I would team it with stripped-back makeup and undone/messy hair.
Look 4: If this classic suit feels a bit boring, add in a pussy bow silk shirt underneath to give you a '70s vibe. As the trousers are nice and long, you could get away with wearing heeled boots for comfort!
Look 5: I would add a blazer on the shoulders that you could take off and go a bit more glam with the hair and makeup, maybe even a red lip.
